Day in the Life of a HR Manager: Meet Holly!

Meet Holly, our HR Manager! She has been working at Speech Graphics for over a year and a half now and is a key employee in managing the runnings of the company and ensuring our staff are well looked after.

We asked her a few questions about her role here at SG, if you’d like to know more about the day-to-day tasks of an HR Manager in the tech industry, keep reading!

What are your main responsibilities?

Everything people related!

From creating L&D and D&I strategies, recruitment, and creation/writing of policies and procedures to assisting in arranging social activities and celebrations. If it involves our people, I am probably involved in some way.

What does a typical working day look like for you?

Some days are quite heavy with meetings, both Katie (HR Coordinator) and I try to make ourselves available to the team should they have queries, require support, or just want to have a chat about work. Having someone trusted to talk to is key to a healthy workplace - especially following so much time spent remotely.

Depending on how busy we are with recruitment I can be assisting Katie in keeping our ATS up to date or interviewing candidates. When this is at a manageable place for one member of HR to take ownership (although it has been a while due to rapid growth!), Katie will lead recruitment efforts while I look to push forward the company efforts on Diversity and Inclusion, Learning and Development and improving our systems/general ways of working. This can involve a lot of research, creating new guidelines/policies, budgeting, and writing business proposals for sign-off.

Launching anything new is always a busy (and a little nerve-wracking) time for the HR team, recently we have been working on introducing a new and improved HRIS that is set up to grow with us globally and create a more inclusive system for our employees based all over!

What would you say your biggest achievement has been during your time here?

As my role is so involved in our hiring and people efforts, I suppose I would have to ask the team!

If I was to guess it, I think other people would say creating the new review cycle or improving our recruitment processes.

But for me personally, I feel I'm just getting started on what will be my biggest achievement. I am really excited about our Learning & Development efforts so far and giving our employees the opportunity to grow professionally. Working with individuals more closely in my recent projects is also giving me more confidence in taking feedback and creating actions that will make Speech Graphics an even better place to work in the future!

Wwhat's your favourite movie and why?

Hard to pick just one! I actually have 3 favourite movies:

Jaws - I have no idea why, but I rewatch it all the time.

True Romance - Whirlwind romance, crazy drug deals, shootouts and Elvis, what's not to like?

Death Becomes Her - two iconic leading ladies and Bruce Willis in a comedic role. A really excellent watch!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Although it can feel a little chaotic at times working in a business growing at a fast pace, we have such an AMAZINGLY talented bunch of people. I love that I get to work with such a diverse and interesting group of people.
